‘Waldek’ about VRT’s decision to outsource ‘Thuis’: “After twenty years, this really hurts”

“After twenty years, this really hurts.” The news that the VRT has stopped the production of a successful series Home outsourcing to an external company also hits the actors like a bomb. “We live in enormous uncertainty,” says Bart Van Avermaet, who has been playing Waldek for twenty years.

Actor Bart Van Avermaet is one of the old van Thuis: he has been playing Waldek in the series for twenty years. On the VRT he reacts to the news that the public broadcaster is going to outsource the production of the successful series. He does this via a video message.

“We have received from Mr Delaplace (CEO Frederik Delaplace, red.) received the message that we are going to change employers,” he says. “It hits like a bomb. Why? The uncertainty. Many people work for Home. I have also been working there for twenty years.

Home was the last fiction program that the VRT made itself. According to Van Avermaet, the fact that they are also going to outsource the latter program to an external production house “hits the actors like a bomb”. “Because we live in enormous uncertainty,” he says in the video message.

“For the time being, we are receiving signals from the management, our producers and social partners that we will receive enormous help. That’s all we can hold on to. But after twenty years this really hurts. We’re going to fight that pain. We’re going to make sure Home stays on the tube, with you. Just as good and just as beautiful.”
