Researchers in Russia have found a prehistoric circle made up almost entirely of mammoth bones. It is the oldest and largest bone circle found in Russia, measuring approximately 12 meters in diameter. This “bonehenge” was built over 22,000 years ago, in the last ice age. It is not clear what the function or meaning of these constructions were.

In recent decades, many of these mammoth bone structures, consisting of dozens of skulls and jaws, have been found in Eastern Europe and North Asia. Researchers say the find is surprising, because people at that time mainly hunted and never stayed in one place for long.

“Mammoth bones are very heavy. Building the circular structure means a huge investment in time and energy,” said archaeologist Alexander Pryor. “It most likely included a ritual element, even though the structure ultimately had a practical purpose.”
