The suspicion was already there, but now there are also figures about candy behavior in corona time. And guess what: The Dutch eat quite a bit more. They spend more money on chocolate and liquorice in particular than before the pandemic, according to a study by ABN Amro, which analyzed figures from supermarkets, drugstores and gas stations.
In 2020, the turnover of chocolate grew by 7 percent and that of liquorice and confectionery such as sour mats, wine gums and fruit gum by 6 percent. In the first four months of 2021, consumers even went a step further: sales growth of 9 percent was recorded for both chocolate and sweets.
It is quite striking that there is now more snacking. In the years before corona, the Dutch became increasingly aware of the negative effects of sugar on health. As a result, the sale of licorice and other sweets barely grew.
