The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has spoken out in favor of Ukraine joining the European Union. She told Euronews that Ukraine “has become one of us” and that the country is welcome in the EU. Ukrainian President Zelensky also reports on Twitter that EU membership was discussed in a telephone conversation with von der Leyen.
Ukraine has incorporated the pursuit of EU membership into its constitution. In 2014, Ukraine concluded an association agreement with the EU, which has led, among other things, to visa-free travel and closer economic cooperation.
Zelensky also telephoned British Prime Minister Johnson last evening. In that conversation, Zelensky said the next 24 hours of the war in Ukraine will be crucial, a Johnson spokesman said.
