After hours of nightly consultations, the coalition talks about the Spring Memorandum have ended ready for now† Prime Minister Rutte now said that he would first discuss the budget with opposition groups in the coming weeks. After that, the intention is that the coalition parties will resume consultations in May, the prime minister reported afterwards.
Rutte emphasized that the coalition has not yet reached an agreement in outline. He spoke of a process that is “really different from other years”. In the past, according to him, the coalition always tried to complete the talks completely, but this time the leaders of VVD, D66, ChristenUnie and CDA want to look for broader support in the House for the amended budget plans.
There must be such a 10 to 15 billion euros found in connection with the unforeseen expenditure due to, among other things, defense investments, rising inflation and the savings tax compensation† According to Rutte, it is already possible to see “where it could land”, but “many variants are still conceivable” for the final form of the budget plans. He didn’t want to say anything about it yet.
