Wajih Saqr: Journey of an Actor and His Impact on Lebanese Society

Monday 25 December 2023 08:35 am

Mirna Walid – Beirut – Actor Wajih Saqr recently participated in a dialogue meeting in the Women’s Affairs Office in the Sin El Fil Kataeb Department, in the presence of the Deputy Head of the Matn Region, Ralph Gideon, and the Head of the Women’s Affairs Office in the Matn Region, Natalie Salhab. Wajih Saqr was honored at the event.
Saqr’s talk dealt with Hayat’s testimony, his beginning and continuity in acting.
Al-Fan website had this interview with Wajih Saqr.

Today you are talking about your life’s journey. Tell us about Wajih Saqr’s childhood.

My childhood was not normal. It included difficulties, including dealing with my family. I lacked my parents’ understanding of me in some matters, and in the end I was able to convince them of my point of view. In this context, I must turn to my parents, especially women, to break down the barriers between them. And between their sons and daughters to bridge the distance.

So you are in favor of the son choosing the field in which he will work in the future, and that the parents do not choose that for him.

Of course, my family objected to me entering the theater, but I entered it, broke the rule, and brought my family close to me, to the point that my mother began acting in clips in the agency I own.

Do the difficult times that a person experiences in his childhood give him more awareness in his life?

These difficult times give a person strength, self-confidence, and self-reliance. Since I was 16 years old, I have not taken a single dollar from my mother and father, and when I grew up, I became the one who cared for them.
Parents should not not fulfill all the requests of their sons and daughters, but rather they should make them search for what they want, because if a person has everything he wants, he loses his ambition.

What was your family’s reaction to your first acting role?

The first acting work I participated in was the series “Bar Al-Aman” in 1991. It was in Amman, Jordan, during which I stood in front of the camera for the first time. When the work was shown, my parents did not watch it, as they never liked seeing me on the screen.
She participated in this work with actors Joumana Sharaf El-Din, Magdy Mashmouchi, and Pierre Dagher, in which she played the role of a bad husband.

To what extent is your name associated with embodying the role of a bad person?

I was offered many roles to play the role of a good person, but I did not accept them, and I succeeded in playing the bad person. There are many stars who embody the role of the good person, and there is not a single star who embodies the character of the bad man except me.
When they look for an actor to embody the character of a bad man, the first person they think of is me, and when I refuse, they think of someone else.

How did you receive the news that Lebanese actor Fadi Ibrahim was ill?

I was very upset, and I had to call him.

How do you view actors being taken off screen as they age?

When an actor sits at home without work, he is considered dead and awaits burial.

What are your preparations currently?

I am preparing a short film starring myself, in which I embody the role of a good man, not a bad man, and it may turn into a cinematic work later.

Who among the actors you watch on screen do you consider to be stars?

There are many. I do not want to mention one and forget another. I love Youssef Al-Khal’s work very much. I hope he will not be absent from the series. I also wish him success in the play “Not Just a World,” which is currently being shown.

The artist Elissa was criticized for asking the audience at her concert in Germany to stand for a minute of silence in sympathy with the Palestinian people. What is your comment?

Elissa’s behavior caught my eye, as it was an expressive step on her part, and I liked that she thought about the matter.

What do you think of the great actor Antoine Kerbaj staying in a nursing home?

I felt very sad for him, as my mother was suffering from the same condition, which was Alzheimer’s, and I refused to put her in a shelter, so I brought a nurse to the house and an assistant for her. I cannot enter the house and not find my mother.
I say to Antoine Kerbaj, “May God grant you health.” I love him very much, and I did not expect him to leave his home one day. From here, I say that marriage is not a guarantee for the afterlife, and it is no longer an example in our days, and Antoine Kerbaj is proof of that. Parents are the blessing of the home, even if no matter what happens to them, they should not be placed outside the home. I suffered a lot with my mother, as she was afflicted with Corona and Alzheimer’s, but I was responsible and transferred her to a hospital home.

Many people these days complain of forgetfulness, what about you?

I forget a lot, but I am still able to memorize texts, except that I forget names and faces.
