Clair Rachel Howell, a 27-year-old waitress and aspiring actress, got a big surprise when a family left her a $500 tip with a note telling her to go see the Broadway musical “Merrily We Roll Along.”
Although he considered saving the money, Howell ultimately decided to use it for the exact purpose the note indicated and went to see the musical starring Daniel Radcliffe, actor world famous for his role as Harry Potter.
“Magic is still alive in New York, as is love, kindness and good people… I love New York City.”
Clair Rachel Howell – Waitress and aspiring actress
The California Native Waitress told the story Instagram, without identifying the restaurant where he works. But she said she’s located in the Theater District, so she often asks her clients about the plays they’re seeing on Broadway.
So, one night in mid-December, he struck up a conversation with a family who was going to see “Merrily We Roll Along” at the Hudson Theater and mentioned that he wanted to see it but knew the tickets were expensive.
Before she had time to say goodbye, the family had left, leaving behind a “crazy” and “unexpected” gift: a tip of $500 on a credit card, after having consumed less than half: 232.86. And also, a written message for him to go see that musical in the “front row.”
“It was a generous act of kindness,” Howell later commented when contacted by New York Post. He added that he never expected the huge tip and said the family had been “super nice” and “super calm” and “not flashy people.”
On Instagram, the young woman added a special message of gratitude to her patron, written from the theater chair days before Christmas: “THANK YOU to the gentleman who gave me this crazy and unexpected gift. I hope you visit me again so I can thank you in person. The magic is still alive in New Yorkk, just like love, kindness and good, GOOD people… I love New York City.”
