Elisabetta reluctantly agreed to cancel her official commitments for a couple of weeks (after the illness that required investigations and a night in hospital on the eve of Cop26), but had expressed a desire to be there in some way at Remembrance Sunday. And on Sunday, November 14, all eyes will be on her in front of the Cenotaph in the heart of London. Which will appear at the window facing the monument. The task of laying the crown at the Cenotaph, in homage to the fallen, for years now Elisabetta has given to her son Carlo who on Saturday received members of the Clarence House Poppy Legion (the association that works to keep alive the memory of the sacrifice in war). A detail, not insignificant, in the subtle liturgy of the power of the Crown in London.

The remembrance ceremony pays off every year homage to the fallen in war and at that “eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month of 1918”, «the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month», Date of the armistice which marked the end of the war. And on 11 November, with the red poppy pinned to the lapel, a reminder of the fallen, it was the Duchess of Cornwall Camilla who laid flowers on the tomb of the unknown British soldier. A gesture that the Duke of Edinburgh, the late Prince Philip, had wanted to perform until the end of his days: a soldier by past and vocation.

Tonight at the Royal Albert Hall, it’s up to instead Carlo and William, with Camilla and Kate, and many other members of the Royal family (as well as the Government), pay homage to the historical and military memory of the country, speaking at the concert that continues the tradition of Remembrance Festival wanted by King George V and Queen Mary in the 1920s. The last time the Windsors entered the concert hall, which this year celebrates 150 years, last September for “No Time To Die”, the World Premiere of the new film from the 007 series.
