Waiting for rivers in the streets

The authorities of the Canary Islands have asked people to keep the necessary emergency items ready and prepare for storms.

This weekend is expected to be abundant rainfall and gusts of wind up to hurricane, equal to more than 118 km / h.

On Friday afternoon, the Spanish emergency authorities sent a tropical cyclone warning in the Canary Islands from midnight. The warning that has been sent has the highest degree of danger, corresponding to a red danger warning in Norway.

The worst Sunday

The Canary Islands are a Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean that includes a number of popular holiday islands, including Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Tenerife.

The worst storm is expected to start on Sunday morning, with up to 30mm of rain per hour and a total of 100mm every 12th hour.

There can also be strong gusts of wind, with a hurricane force of up to 120 kilometers per hour. The storm is expected to last until Monday.

All schools will be closed on Monday.

– The ground here is so dry, that when it rains a lot, there are many floods, it is dense and flows along the roads. In Las Palmas there are rivers in the streets when there is a real downpour, Leo Lunde tells Dagbladet. The Norwegian lives in Las Palmas, on the island of Gran Canaria, and has lived on the island for ten years.

Preparations made

Such storms often lead to power outages in the Canary Islands.

On a daily basis, Lunde works as a journalist and editor in Canarievis. Now he is well prepared for the storm: he cleaned up the drains and removed the outdoor furniture from the roof terrace. The artificial grass has been removed, so that the water can be sucked into the ground.

– The authorities asked us to have the necessary equipment such as a torch, a gas stove, candles and enough food and water to last a few days, he says.

So he did it.

Such weather warnings also came earlier, without hitting. Then it ended with a few scattered raindrops. Lunde believes it will work this time.

– We need rain. Here it is very dry and in recent years it has rained very little. But of course I hope it’s not that bad that it affects people and property, says Leo Lunde.
