Waiting fifteen minutes after booster shot remains due to the risk of an allergic reaction

The Ministry of Health has decided this after an investigation by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) and the side effects institute Lareb.

‘Be able to intervene quickly’

If a severe reaction occurs, it can be dangerous. That is why there are also doctors present in this waiting area. “They can intervene very quickly. It is impossible to predict who will experience this reaction,” the ministry reports. According to the department, the waiting time has no influence on the injection rate at the GGDs.

According to the Lareb, there are 13 reports of severe allergic reactions to every million corona shots.

Increase puncture rate

Last December, the ministry had asked for the investigation into the removal of the waiting period. If people can leave the vaccination site immediately after the booster shot, and do not have to sit in a chair for 15 minutes, that could help to speed up the vaccination campaign.

The World Health Organization (WHO) of the United Nations and the European vaccine watchdog, the EMA, also advise to keep a close eye on vaccinated people for 15 minutes. If people have an allergic reaction to the vaccine, the risk is greatest in the first 15 minutes.

People who have had severe reactions to a shot in the past should be monitored for at least half an hour.

One in three adults has already had a booster shot

Nearly one in three adults has received a booster shot against the coronavirus. About 4.5 million people received a booster, 32 percent of the total, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) reported today in weekly figures.

About 11.9 million adults in the Netherlands are fully vaccinated. About 4.5 million of them have now been boosted and 131,000 have had an additional shot. That means that there are still 7.2 million adults who are eligible for a booster shot. Of these, about 1.1 million people have recently had corona and several hundred thousand people who had their last corona jab too recently. So they have to wait a little longer.

The government wants most adults to have a booster shot by the end of January. This requires approximately 1.5 million booster vaccinations per week. This corresponds to the injection rate of the past week. Then 1.54 million booster shots were taken.
