Wagner mercenaries are said to be active again in eastern Ukraine. According to Ilya Yevlash, spokesperson for the Eastern Ukrainian Armed Forces, a large part of the mercenaries who had left for Belarus have returned to the front in his country.
Of the six thousand Wagner mercenaries who, according to the Ukrainian border guard, had moved to Belarus, only five hundred are now believed to be in that country.
Some mercenaries have gone to Africa, where Wagner is hired by several countries. According to Kyiv, others have signed contracts with the Russian Ministry of Defense and are again active on the front lines in Ukraine.
The mercenary army currently has no clear leader. Until last month, that was Yevgeny Prigozhin, who, according to Russian authorities, died when his plane crashed en route from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
Prigozhin led the mercenary army in a march on Moscow in June, frustrated by what he saw as poor leadership of the Russian armed forces. Western intelligence services suspect that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the downing of Prigozhin’s plane.
