As the number of “Wagner’s” mercenaries in Balkrevia increases, the presidents of Lithuania and Latvia confirm that the threat posed by “Wagner” is taken seriously, and a new source of danger has appeared near our countries. The leaders of the states note that “Wagner” mercenaries are only one part of the “cocktail” prepared by the Minsk regime for our region, Lithuanian TV3 reports.
This issue is being discussed today at the meeting of the presidents of Lithuania and Latvia. “Since the first news about the presence of Russian soldiers in Belarus, and now that we hear the news that Wagner mercenaries are moving to Belarus, it seems to me that the security situation in the region has definitely worsened. We need to follow the latest information about the movement of mercenaries to Belarus, and we must take it seriously. We must prepare for all possible scenarios. In our assessment, the Wagner mercenaries do not yet pose a direct and clear threat to Latvia’s security. However, we cannot rule out the scenario that hybrid actions directed against both Lithuania and Latvia may begin , which the Lukashenko regime can use in a similar way to the migrant crisis. Such scenarios are possible and cannot be ruled out,” Latvian President Edgars Rinkevičs said after meeting with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėdas.
G. Nausėda said that he signed every word that E. Rinkeviča said. “It is really a deterioration of the security situation in our region, and I have said this many times. It doesn’t really matter what the Wagner group’s intentions are. It is often debated which direction they might go. This is not essential, as plans can change at any time. The mere fact that these groups are located very close to our borders creates additional threats,” said G. Nausėda.
The portal NRA already wrote that the President Edgars Rinkevičs went on an official visit to Vilnius today.
During the visit, Rinkēvičs is scheduled to meet with the President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėdas and the Speaker of the Lithuanian Parliament Viktorijas Chmilītis-Nilsens.
It is expected that during the meeting, the decisions taken at the NATO Vilnius summit and the security of the Baltic region, energy security issues, as well as opportunities for strengthening cooperation between Latvia and Lithuania will be discussed.
It has already been reported that on July 10, Rinkēvičs went to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, on his first foreign visit, where he met with Estonian President Alar Karis, Prime Minister Kai Kallas, Speaker of the Parliament Lauri Husar and Foreign Minister Margus Cahkna.
