Wagner Group Commander Accuses Russian Army of Planting Mines in Eastern Ukraine

The commander of the Russian private military “Wagner” group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, continues to make statements revealing “deep” differences with the Russian army regarding the ongoing military operations in Ukraine.

According to the Telegraph newspaper, Prigozhin accused the Russian Defense Ministry of “attempting to blow up his fighters by laying mines on their way” around the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine.

The commander of Wagner’s forces accused the Russian forces of planting these mines, while his members were leaving Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, after they managed to take control of the city last May, before handing it over to the Russian army.

Prigozhin added that the Russian army did not need to plant these mines “in order to deter the enemy” in that rear area.

The “Wagner” commander said, “This matter leads to the conclusion that these mines were planted in the area in order to block the path of the advanced units of Wagner.”

The “Wagner” group has previously leveled wholesale accusations against the Russian army, including the failure to send supplies that would achieve positive results for Moscow, in the midst of the war.

Last May, Prigozhin said he was convinced that senior Kremlin officials had banned news about him from being published in state media, warning that “this misleading approach will lead to a backlash from the Russian people within months.”

Prigozhin is the most prominent figure in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s circle in the 15-month-old war in Ukraine.

Earlier this month, Wagner forces captured the city of Bakhmut, but state television played down its role in this important field advance.
