Wage pressure – do Polish workers expect increases in 2022? The research results

More than half of the employees did not receive raises in 2021. Of those they got, 41 percent believed the increase was less than expected, according to the Randstad Research Institute’s Labor Market Monitor. What is more, half of the employed expect raises in the near future.

Wage pressure and raises

Last year a raise of 45 percent respondents. Salary increases were most evident in industry, health care and social welfare (56% each), as well as transport and logistics (54%). More often than the average pay raises were also received by security workers (54%) and telecommunications and IT (49%), the least frequently – employees of retail and wholesale trade (36%), hotel and catering (35%) and education (30%). ).

The increases most often amounted to 5-10% (42% of those who received higher wages answered that question). More than a quarter of employees (27 percent) received less than 5 percent. Raises of 10-20 percent. went to 18 percent. employees, and over 20 percent. – up to 5 percent employed. The amount of raises was related to age and education – the highest were received by the younger and better educated.

Employers and employee rotation

Konfederacja Lewiatan’s labor market expert Monika Fedorczuk commented that for another pandemic year, the percentage of respondents who received a raise is still high, which shows that employers, by increasing wages, are trying to reduce employee turnover for fear of problems with filling the vacancy. She pointed out that the last year for some employers, e.g. in catering or tourism, was the 2020 time of catching up.

– Some employers postponed decisions on pay rises until January 2022, fearing the effects of the Polish order and taking into account the need to supplement the reduction in net salaries of employees due to tax changes – added Fedorczuk.

Of those who got a raise, 46 percent. stated that its scale was in line with their expectations, while 41 percent. hoped for a higher wage increase.

Increases in 2022

50 percent employees expect a raise in the near future. At the same time, 42 percent. he does not intend to ask his superiors for it, because he thinks that it would be badly received by the boss and is afraid of his reaction. Almost every third respondent plans to talk about a raise, mostly motivating it with inflation (65%). Half of the respondents also believe that they are entitled to a raise because of the high quality of their work. “Poles’ wage expectations are growing and there are many indications that the wage pressure will continue in 2022” – emphasizes Randstad.

The research was carried out by the Randstad Research Institute and the Pollster Research Institute. They were carried out on December 6-26 last year. on a group of 1000 working respondents using the CAWI method (computer-assisted interview conducted via a website, on an internet panel).
