Brenninkmeijer already took a step back at the end of August, and in his place came an observer in the person of Jan Boelhouwer. He had to investigate the causes of the ongoing administrative crisis in Waalre.
Now that Brenninkmeijer is definitely leaving, Boelhouwer will stay on as acting mayor for a while. According to Commissioner Van de Donk, he must “raise the quality of the administration and the municipal apparatus to a higher level.”
The province appointed Boelhouwer in August to put an end to the lingering problems between Mayor Jan Brenninkmeijer, the four aldermen and the city council. In July, the aldermen canceled their confidence in the mayor. The councilors repeatedly felt that they did not support the mayor.
“One thing has become completely clear,” said Brenninkmeijer on Wednesday. “The administrative situation is so complicated that it is necessary that in various positions, others, uninhibited, free from the past and with a fresh mind and with a fresh outlook take over.”
