Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – WhatsApp (WA) can already be used without having to connect to the internet on the main cellphone. Because the company has launched a feature called Multi device, where one account can be accessed on several devices.
This is quite different from the previous capabilities, where one account can be accessed on the phone and the web at the same time. But with a note that the phone must remain connected to the internet.
For the Multi device feature, the phone doesn’t need to be connected to the internet anymore or the battery dies. That way WhatsApp can be run on other devices.
Multi-device can be used on four devices at the same time non-phone to run one account. The feature is already in the open beta testing phase. All users can use it as long as they register.
“With this new capability you can now use WhatsApp on your phone and up to 4 other non-phone devices at the same time, even if your phone’s battery dies,” said Facebook’s Engineering page quoted Tuesday (11/23/2021).
WhatsApp wrote on the FAQ page that all users of the regular and business beta versions of the application on both Android and iOS can take part in the trial. Users will also have to make sure WhatsApp is up to date in order to join the beta testing.
Immediately after joining the feature trial, users must link their non-phone companion device.
On Android, to join is open the app and then press the Options menu or the three-dot icon. Next click the Linked Devices menu and press Multi-device beta and select ‘join now’.
For iOS users, go to settings and click Linked Devices. Next click Multi-device beta or Multi-device beta and Join Beta.
WhatsApp also gives users the ability to opt out of this beta trial. For Android repeat the above method to Multi-device Beta and click Exit Beta, while for iPhone, when already in Multi-device Beta click Exit Beta.
The security and privacy of users is ensured to be maintained by the parent company Meta. The company, formerly known as Facebook, said this was maintained through end-to-end encryption, which is already used in WhatsApp.
“It is important that we have developed new technology to maintain end-to-end encryption while still managing to sync your data such as contact names, chat archives, starred messages and more across devices,” said Facebook.
