VW calls back 20-year-old cars because of a safety problem

Murks does not expire: after almost a quarter of a century, the Federal Motor Transport Authority is now monitoring a VW recall. Unfortunately, it is about a component that does not come from Wolfsburg at all.

At Volkswagen there is a recall for some older models due to the risk of airbag deployment. The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) published corresponding data on Thursday. According to the Flensburg authorities, relatively few vehicles are affected: It is about a little more than 4,100 copies of the Golf and Passat from the years of construction 1997 to 1999, of which around 3,200 are probably in Germany.

Faulty airbag deployment threatens

The reason for the action monitored by the KBA is that the gas generator in the airbag is not sufficiently sealed – this could lead to “faulty activation”. “In extreme cases, the gas generator housing could tear and injure the occupants.” So far, however, no personal injury or property damage is known, the office emphasized.

The company said the “inadequate seal” could occasionally occur in models of the Golf Cabrio and Passat from the three years in question. “As a result, the propellant can draw moisture, which means that the pressure cannot be fully guaranteed when the airbag is deployed. If the propellant has dried again at the time of deployment, an increased pressure can in some cases damage the gas generator housing.” As a precaution, 3,122 vehicles would be recalled as a precaution.

Airbag problems again and again

In recent years, there have been problems with defective airbags in several countries. In the United States, injuries and even several deaths had occurred due to excessive air cushions that threw parts of the metal cladding through the vehicle.
