Liberal support for the law could also complicate formation. The VVD, together with Pieter Omtzigt’s NSC and the Boer Burger Beweging, are currently negotiating with Geert Wilders’ PVV about a new government. Wilders himself is strongly opposed to the distribution law.
The fact that the VVD now approves this in current cases is a thorn in Wilders’ side. “We have a problem, we are going to talk about it,” he told colleagues at the Dutch public broadcaster NOS. The negotiators are meeting again today.
According to party leader Yesilgöz, the fact that the VVD Senate faction votes in favor of the law is the faction’s every right. She herself maintains that agreements must first be made to limit the number of asylum seekers and that for her that is the aim of the formation discussions on the theme of migration. Whether this can provide Wilders with sufficient reassurance remains to be seen.
