The Liberals’ support for the law could also complicate coalition formation. The VVD, together with Pieter Omtzigt’s NSC and the Boer Citizen Movement, are currently in discussions with Geert Wilders’ PVV about the formation of a new government. Wilders himself is strongly opposed to the distribution law.
For Wilders it is a source of irritation that the VVD, despite its status as a caretaker government, still approves the law. “We have a problem, we are going to talk about it,” he told colleagues at the Dutch public broadcaster NOS. Negotiators will meet again today.
According to party leader Yesilgöz, the VVD Senate faction has every right to vote in favor of the law. However, she continues to emphasize that agreements must first be made to limit the number of asylum seekers, and that for her this is the core of the formation discussions on the subject of migration. Whether Wilders can be sufficiently reassured remains to be seen.
