Drieman thinks it is a shame that the VVD is leaving the table before the talks about the cabinet have even started. “I don’t think it fits in with the campaign that was conducted. I think we agreed that we would not exclude a single voter. And before a conversation has been held, you exclude 2.5 million voters.”
Drieman is not the only one who thinks this way. The VVD faction in Steenbergen even sent an urgent letter. “Many VVD voters voted for the PVV to prevent a left-wing victory and to give a right-wing coalition the opportunity,” says Tineke Feskens. “That has now been nullified.”
Last Friday, Yeşilgöz announced that she does not want to join the government with the PVV. She cited the loss of ten seats as the reason. She did say that the VVD, as a tolerating partner, may support a ‘cabinet of winners’.
‘Preference for right-wing cabinet with PVV’
Political reporter for RTL Nieuws, Fons Lambie, says that the VVD had a clear strategy after the last Rutte cabinet. “It was time for a right-wing policy in a right-wing cabinet. Dilan Yeşilgöz did not even rule out Geert Wilders’ PVV, making Wilders suddenly become a potential government party again after years of exclusion.”
But after Wilders’ win and the VVD’s loss, the VVD leadership now opts for tolerance, says Lambie. “And in that chess game of cabinet formation, the VVD has put maximum pressure on Wilders and Omtzigt. But there is criticism among its own supporters. If this move by Yeşilgöz ensures that the cabinet formation will take much longer, or that there may be no right-wing cabinet, this criticism may increase further.”
In addition, the VVD supporters seem to have less difficulty with the PVV. “All kinds of polls and research show that the VVD supporters have a strong preference for a right-wing cabinet with the PVV.”
“I don’t think the Dutch would benefit from a political chess game,” says Drieman of VVD Cranendonck. “I actually think that this has caused people to vote for the PVV, because they no longer feel like it.”
Does not offer solutions to problems
“This move, no matter how tactical, does not offer solutions to the problems of the Dutch. That is where the VVD’s priorities should lie.”
Feskens from VVD Steenbergen agrees. “We don’t send out a big signal very often. We do our work locally and always support national politics. But with this decision we felt that we had to do something about it.”
Annemarie Jorritsma, former chairman of the VVD faction, on the other hand, thinks it is a ‘wise decision’ by Yeşilgöz. “I think the voter really wants something different.”
Yeşilgöz did not want to respond to questions from RTL News today.
