VVD puts Johan Remkes forward as new informateur

The 70-year-old Johan Remkes is an experienced director and currently acting commissioner of the King in Limburg. Before that he was, among other things, Minister of the Interior and State Secretary for Housing. He was recently acting mayor of The Hague and the King’s Commissioner in North Holland. Last year he also led a committee that issued advice to the cabinet on the nitrogen problem.

Long experience

Political reporter Frits Wester: “Johan Remkes is an obvious choice given his long experience. Not only as a party politician, but also as a director, he stands above the parties. It will be up to him, if the House agrees, to explore the possibilities In view of his recent chairmanship of the State Commission for the Parliamentary System, he seems to be the right person to further explore and shape this political reality, which is almost new for the Netherlands.”

Yesterday it was announced that VVD and CDA do not want to continue talking with the PvdA and GroenLinks about the formation of a new cabinet. That is what PvdA leader Lilianne Ploumen said yesterday after a conversation with informateur Mariëtte Hamer. D66 has simultaneously blocked cooperation with the ChristenUnie.

Rutte thinks substantive differences are too great

According to VVD leader Mark Rutte, the substantive differences between his party and the ‘summation’ of PvdA and GroenLinks are too great. That is why he told Klaver and Ploumen that it is not possible to rule with them together.
