VVD member Ruben Brekelmans calls on the cabinet to take action. The MP is convinced that Secretary of State Van der Burg is doing his utmost, but would like to see concrete measures before the summer to reduce the influx of asylum seekers. “Something really needs to be done at the asylum in the coming months. Some measures can already have an effect in the short term,” he says in Sven op 1 on NPO Radio 1.
Brekelmans refers, for example, to stricter controls of the Dutch border and changes to the IND’s approval process. Other measures will only have an effect in the longer term, but according to Brekelmans they are therefore no less important. For example, he mentions a possible deal with Tunisia – similar to the Turkey deal of 2015. “It will not be easy, but European pressure on Tunisia is increasing. Italy has declared a state of emergency. I hope that the joint pressure will lead to Tunisia wanting to make agreements.”

These agreements with North African countries are crucial, according to the asylum spokesperson for the VVD. “If agreements are reached, the influx can be reduced in the short term. But if that is not the case, the State Secretary will have to come to an agreement with municipalities to create sufficient reception places.”
According to Brekelmans, there is no question of declaring a state of emergency regarding asylum or temporarily canceling the Schengen Agreement, although the MP confirms that he cannot rule out anything.
