VVD and CDA stand firm about the ban on fireworks

After the troubled New Year, the police again plead for a national ban, but the right-wing parties in the coalition do not want that.

That emergency workers are pelted with fireworks is “unacceptable”, says VVD MP Dilan Yesilgöz. “No fireworks prohibition helps against that, that is unrelated. Hard punishment is the only option.”

“A general banning ban will not help without intensifying enforcement,” says CDA MP Chris van Dam. According to him, the “good and faithful citizen” will be without fireworks, while rioters can still get hold of fireworks that have been bought across the border.

Single shots

Van Dam emphasizes that in 2019 his party was somewhat “pushed”, and for example, proposed a ban on single shots, a plastic shell from which a light bullet is shot that hits hard in the air.

Justice minister Ferd Grapperhaus (also CDA) told De Telegraaf before the turn of the year that he was considering submitting further measures to the House of Representatives in the new year if the old and new were to be unsettled again. Opposition parties GroenLinks and Party for the Animals want to get a prohibition themselves, through an initiative law.

“Only decorative fireworks”

Chief of Police Erik Akerboom said after the troubled turn of the year: “We just have to start selling decorative fireworks that can no longer be thrown. In addition, we only have to hold large joint events where fireworks are lit, and punish harder to break this trend. “
