Most cases of COVID-19 infection in children tend to be mild. However, this does not mean that COVID-19 in children can be underestimated because there is still a risk of severe symptoms or further illness appearing afterward.
The COVID-19 task force of the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI), Dr. Yogi Prawira, SpA(K), reminded parents to be aware of a severe inflammatory condition called multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). This condition is dangerous because it can cause death.
dr Yogi said that it was not yet known for sure what risk factors could trigger MIS-C so it was difficult to predict. The risk of MIS-C can be experienced by all children who have been infected with COVID-19, even those who do not have comorbid diseases or when infected may only have mild symptoms.
“MIS-C itself until now there are no risk factors that we can map. There are children whose MIS-C was previously healthy and healthy, even when the infection was mild, but after that there was extraordinary inflammation,” said Dr Yogi in an online broadcast on Instagram. IDAI, Thursday (3/2/2022).
For parents whose children have been infected with COVID-19, Dr. Yogi suggests continuing to monitor the condition of their children for the next six weeks. Be aware of symptoms ranging from respiratory problems, skin rashes, indigestion, red eyes (conjunctivitis), to weakness or fatigue because they can be signs of inflammation.
If indeed the child then looks fine after recovering from COVID-19, parents also don’t need to panic. There is no need to take your child to a health facility for an X-ray or anything like that.
“If the child is okay, just being active, there may not be an indication that he needs an X-ray. The important thing is that after self-isolation, after 6 weeks, keep monitoring for signs of danger,” said Dr Yogi.
“As soon as there are symptoms, you must immediately go to the doctor, don’t delay it to determine whether the child has hyperinflammation,” he concluded.
