VTM2’s Back to Reality: Natalia and Astrid Coppens Living as Single Mothers Sparks Controversy and Criticism

The VTM2 program Back to reality, in which Natalia and Astrid Coppens live for a month as a single mother on a limited budget, provokes a lot of reactions. Siska Schoeters and Herman Brusselmans also do not spare their criticism.

The idea behind Back to Reality is: two rich and famous people suddenly live the life of a single mother for a month. In this case Natalia and Astrid Coppens do that. But real single mothers have not spared their criticism since the first episode. It is called downright harmful.

Famous people also support this criticism. VRT 1 and Radio 2 presenter Siska Schoeters, for example. “In thoughts of all the single mothers who cannot ‘approach’ that task, but live it every day,” she writes on Instagram. “Not being able to work part-time, but working overtime. And they would be very happy just with a car.”

Herman Brusselmans was just as critical of the program in Gert’s table. “For example, you see Natalia on The Voice, and you know she makes a lot of money from that,” the author said. “A day later she says in a program that she only has 4 euros left to Astrid, who was once with a millionaire. Those two are going to be poor people for a month. I find that horrible.”

VTM2 is now defending itself against the criticism. “We do not pretend that Astrid and Natalia now know what it is like to get by on a limited income,” says spokesperson Tine Danschieter. “This is not so much a program about poverty, but about Belgians who work hard and have difficulty making ends meet. We opted for a light tone, because we wanted to create a nice program.”
