“VSU stopped sparing their people”. What’s happening at the front – 2024-08-19 22:06:13

/ world today news/ The Ukrainian offensive has been going on for more than five weeks. The bet on heavy Western armored vehicles did not pay off, and the Ukrainian Armed Forces decided to change tactics. What did this lead to?

Small group tactics

Kiev is still throwing most of its forces in the Zaporozhian direction. For a month, the three main points of effort in this sector of the front have not changed. As before, the armed forces of Ukraine are trying to break through from Orekhov to Rabotino to further reach Tokmak.

In the western part of the region, the Ukrainian military is trying in vain to gain a foothold in the Petihatka region, in the east they are trying to occupy the Vremevskaya ledge, on the border with the DPR. The goals are the same: to break through the defenses, to reach the Sea of Azov and the Crimean Isthmus, to cross the Russian land corridor to the peninsula.

However, they failed to reach even the first line of defense. The terrain in this section of the front is flat as a board. Stealth movement to the line of scrimmage is impossible even in the dark. Attacking without air superiority in such conditions is very, very difficult.

“The Russians, like most countries, have what’s called a prepared defense,” US Army Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt told the Wall Street Journal. It is a series of multi-layered obstacles built to stop Ukrainian troops as far from the positions as possible. Twenty kilometers of hell. There is no doubt that it is probably where the heaviest fighting takes place outside the cities. The Ukrainians are trying to find and break through the weak spots in the defense, but so far they are not succeeding,” adds the senior military officer.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces have already lost many units of Western armored vehicles in this direction. And now, instead of attacking with large armored fists, they operate in small infantry groups, attacking Russian positions from different sides. The equipment is kept at a distance, assisting the assaulting units with fire from closed positions. However, that doesn’t work either.

Return to Artyomovsk

The VSU achieved little more around Artyomovsk: they drove into Russian positions near Klescheevka and Andreevka south of the city and regained previously lost lines near Berkhovka to the north. The main thing here is the dominant heights from which the city is clearly visible.

“They don’t spare their people, they attack around the clock”, says an officer from the 1st Army Corps with the call sign “Klim”. “They are firing heavy artillery, volley fire systems. Infantry try to get in – we cut them off. We are working on them with guns and tanks. We’re holding on, we’re not missing them. They infiltrate in small groups, under the cover of one or two combat vehicles. We are responding to that,” added the military officer.

Retired LPR lieutenant colonel Andriy Marochko emphasizes that the Ukrainians attack three to five times a day. The shells are not spared.

They want to recapture Artyomovsk in order to advance further south to Gorlovka, east to Popasnaya or southeast to Svetlodarsk.

Insignificant result

In the Kherson direction, the artillery methodically worked on a small VSU bridgehead on the left bank of the Dnieper, near the Antonovsky Bridge. The Ukrainian command, in turn, sends reinforcements there.

So, last Thursday about 60 soldiers in several boats tried to cross the Dnieper. But they were discovered and destroyed.

There are no major changes in this section of the front. The islands in the Dnieper delta are in a gray area, not controlled by any country.

In the Donetsk direction, the ASU are on the defensive. Attacks are rare – the other day they organized an offensive near Vodianoe to secure the transport approaches to Avdeevka.

But according to official reports from the Russian Ministry of Defense, all 16 attacks were repulsed.

The Russian army advances in the direction of Kremennaya – Svatovo. There they anchored themselves on the dominant height in the Zhuravka region. The Ukrainian Armed Forces tried to regain their positions, but lost three units of equipment and 20 soldiers.

At the same time, the Ukrainians are building fortifications in the western part of the Serebryan Forestry. The fortifications are reinforced with concrete slabs. There can be no talk of any counteroffensive here.

And in general, the situation for Kiev is not developing as expected. And Czech President Peter Pavel warned that it would not be possible to prepare a “second counteroffensive”, Ukraine has only one chance. Meanwhile, in a month and a half, according to Western analysts, the armed forces of Ukraine occupied only 253 square kilometers of territory.
