TVSilent, but no less impressive. VRT weatherwoman Jacotte Brokken (30) will compete against Charlotte Adigéry and Guga Baúl tonight for the title of ‘The smartest person in the world’, but has already won somewhat. Twelve participations, no one could match her this season. But: “I was lucky,” he says matter-of-factly.
“When you appear on television, you know that there are certain expectations that come with it. But I never expected that my participation in ‘The Smartest Person in the World’ would become such a hot topic. Even people I haven’t heard from in a long time suddenly send me messages saying they are supporting,” Jacotte Brokken laughs. Audibly satisfied that she can count herself among the three best players of the season, although the VRT weather forecaster remains down-to-earth about this. “I was lucky that the questions were mostly in my area of knowledge,” she explains. “And if that wasn’t the case, like with history questions, I knew enough not to be missed.”

Jacotte – who is a chemist by training – did not have a specific strategy for the final weeks. “I repeated some things for each episode and kept following current events, and that was it,” she says. “I know that Guga Baúl approached his participation in a very structured manner, but that was not the case for me. I had also decided for myself that I would not approach the final weeks any differently than the ‘regular’ participations. Also because I felt little difference between them. I was barely away for one episode when the normal gameplay was over, and then I had to get back to work. That was tough at times, but I enjoyed it so much at the same time. I already feel like I’m going to fall into a black hole from Friday.”
Nice result
Last season, ‘The smartest person in the world’ featured striking candidates and ditto outpourings. Among flamboyant figures such as Charlotte Adigéry, Jeroen Leenders and Alex Agnew, Jacotte remained largely under the radar. Not that it made her any less efficient at the game. “I may not have been the most striking appearance of the candidates, but I did participate twelve times,” she says. “Even if I don’t win, that’s still a good result. Whatever happens next: I am very proud of my course.”

Wet Christmas
Just before Christmas, there is no escape for Jacotte either: the question of whether it will be a white Christmas. “Unfortunately, I have to disappoint everyone who was hoping for snow,” she says. “If Christmas is anything to go by in Flanders, it will be especially wet in the morning. Afterwards it will still be dry, with clear spells. The weather is currently too mild for snow. But who knows, we might get a white Christmas next year. And my second participation in ‘The smartest person in the world’. Fingers crossed (laughs).”
