Studio 100 has radio plans and wants to conquer a place on the FM band at the expense of Nostalgia, Joe or Q-Music. The permit procedure of the Flemish government is still ongoing.
To reinforce its radio ambitions, Studio 100 launched the online radio platform radio.vlaanderen last month. It then put a series of its own new digital radio stations in the spotlight, as well as streams from channels from VRT and DPG Media, among others.
And they didn’t take that. In a response, the VRT says that the company Digitale Radio Vlaanderen, founded by VRT, Mediahuis and DPG Media, is focusing on Radioplayer. This is an online radio platform that has been around for some time, comparable to that of Studio 100. According to the VRT, Radioplayer has “the power to ensure the place of radio on a European scale in all new devices”.
“In a very challenging online listening market, it is better to join forces than to fragment them,” said the public broadcaster. “The radio.vlaanderen initiative goes against Radioplayer’s main ambition to jointly engage all Flemish players in the battle with international digital players. We have asked Studio100 not to cause further fragmentation and not to mortgage the digitization of radio in Flanders.”
Studio 100 does not want to respond for the time being. The group’s radio platform is still online, and has since been expanded with a series of lesser-known (local) radio stations.
