VR-Bank Bad Salzungen Schmalkalden made headlines at the end of 2018 when it hired none other than Stefan Effenberg in its credit department. The ex-FC Bayern star then became a “regular employee” of the bank, a spokesman explained at the time. He was supposed to take care of the football business for the bank. Among other things, his department granted loans to professional clubs.

This is now apparently over, as the “Handelsblatt” reported on Thursday (February 29). The bank therefore wants to withdraw from the football business – and Effenberg is consequently thrown out. Apparently the former football professional doesn’t like it at all. He should defend himself against the measure with a dismissal protection lawsuit, which is now before the labor court in Suhl. The first day of negotiations is scheduled to be March 6th, as the “Handelsblatt” further reports.

More news:

The southern Thuringian bank has repeatedly found itself in the headlines in recent months because of questionable transactions. According to “MDR-Thüringen”, for example, she is said to have granted loans to dubious companies – including in the football sector. In addition, properties are said to have been purchased “for no apparent reason”. For these reasons, the financial supervisory authority BAFIN also got involved in December last year. Since then, a special representative has been taking care of the bank’s business. The financial institution itself emphasizes to “MDR-Thüringen” that customers’ deposits are protected within the legally regulated area.
