SPACE — On January 24, 1986, NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft flew past the planet Uranus. It was the first time a spacecraft visited Uranus.
Its sister spacecraft, Voyager 1, only managed to reach Saturn before flying out of the plane of the solar system. Voyager 2 flew within 50,600 miles of Uranus and took the first and only close-up photo of the planet Uranus.
During the encounter, Voyager 2 examined the rings around Uranus and witnessed 10 of its 27 known moons. Voyager 2 also discovered the planet’s magnetic field was chaotic due to its strange sideways orientation.
The spacecraft is now on its way out of the solar system and into interstellar space. Following in the footsteps of its twin, Voyager 1. Source: Space.com
