Voyager-1 Space Probe Stops Sending Signals after 46 Years: Historic Update from NASA

Compiled by: Oğuzcan Atış / Milliyet.com.tr – The Voyager-1 space probe, which was sent into space by the American Space and Aviation Administration (NASA) in 1977 within the scope of the Voyager program, stopped sending signals to the Earth once again after 46 years. Authorities announced that efforts are continuing to re-establish contact with Voyager-1, which made history as the first man-made vehicle to officially leave the Solar System on August 25, 2012 and collected data considered very valuable for the scientific world.

The space probe, which is currently approximately 24 billion kilometers away from Earth, was initially intended to serve for 5 years, and it was planned to collect data about the planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune during its mission. However, after the probe lasted longer than expected, mission updates made Voyager-1 and its immediate successor, Vayager-2, the two longest-operating spacecraft in human history. Voyager-1 stopped sending signals in May 2022, but started sending signals again as a result of the efforts of engineers. Time will tell whether the current efforts to get Voyager-1 to send signals again will work.

IT TAKES 45 HOURS TO ESTABLISH HEALTHY COMMUNICATION

Authorities state that the interventions to these and similar problems that will occur on Voyager-1 are a great success. According to the information given, the signals sent to Voyager-1 arrive after 22 and a half hours, and the interaction lasts 45 hours in total. Officials say that the current malfunction was first noticed on November 14, and that the communication system on the space probe constantly sends repeating signals and underlines that Voyager-1 has not sent new data for a while.

According to NASA, the Voyager team sent commands to restart the spacecraft’s flight data system over the weekend, but they have not yet received any usable data. Engineers working in the Voyager program say that work is continuing to fix the problem and that this work may take weeks. NASA officials think that the ongoing malfunction is different from those experienced in recent years, and that a similar problem parallels the problem experienced in 1981.

Gold records placed on spacecraft within the scope of the Voyager program

‘MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE’

Although the main mission of the Voyager spacecraft is to collect and study data about the planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, the spacecraft has a different mission. Probes 1 and 2, launched into space within the scope of the ‘Voyager’ project, carry golden records in which information about the planet Earth and the species living on it is embedded, in case the spacecraft is found by intelligent life forms from other planetary systems. In this respect, space probes are seen as a ‘message in a bottle dropped into the sea’.

The golden records contain sounds and images that summarize various aspects of life on Earth. It acts as a ‘time capsule’ containing Earth’s weather, natural sounds of wildlife, people speaking 55 different languages and printed messages from political leaders of the time.

‘GOOD LUCK TO YOUR MORNING SHERIFFS’

The golden record carried by Voyager contains greetings in many languages, including Turkish. In the Turkish message inside the record, “Dear Turkish-speaking friends, may your morning blessings be good” expressions are used. Turkish recordings were made by Prof. who taught English at Robert College in the 1960s. Dr. It is known that Peten was made by Ian Kuniholm.

Prof. Dr. Kuniholm answered the question posed to him before on this subject: “Behçet Kemal Çağlar was also a literature teacher at the college at that time. “I made a recording in Turkish with the way Behçet Kemal Çağlar greets me every morning.” He explained his experiences during the recording period.
