Vox has failed once again in Galicia in the general elections on July 23. Although May 28 marked a kind of milestone by getting its first councilor in the community, thanks to 176 people who voted for them in Avión (Ourense), 23-J has meant a new electoral failure in Galician lands of the extreme right party of Abascal, achieving 0 seats and much less support than in 2019.
Abascal, of a Galician mother, It has only obtained 4.79% of the votes in Galicia, a lower percentage than the 7.82% achieved in the November 2019 elections. Galicia is the second community where Vox has obtained the lowest percentage of votes, above the Basque Country, the place of origin of the president of the far-right party, where it has obtained only 2.61%.
This 4.79% of the vote in Galicia has been quite stable in the four provinces and in almost all the municipalities, with ups and downs, but there is only one town that stands out: Riverside. For some reason, in the capital of Barbanza, the party of Santiago Abascal has obtained almost twice the support of the average community. In Ribeira, Vox has obtained 9.17% of the votes, well above the rest of the Galician municipalities and 4.14% more than the 5.03% obtained in the province of A Coruña.
This town of about 30,000 inhabitants is one of the 28 in which Vox obtained more than 6% of the votes, but it is far above the others where the far-right party achieved a percentage of votes notably higher than the average for all of Galicia. If Vox had received similar support throughout the province of A Coruña, it could have won the last of the eight seats that this constituency distributes. Looking at the map of votes by census tract, it can be seen that in the center of Santa Uxía de Ribeira Vox achieved 13.9% in section 01-008 and 12.4% in 01-009. In addition, Abascal’s party achieved 12.2% in O Touro (section 02-001) and 10.6% in Aguiño (section 03-002).
