Voting in the second round of presidential elections has begun in Argentina. SIA reports that polling stations will open at 08:00 local time (15:00 Baku time) and remain open until 18:00 (01:00 Baku time).
Five candidates are vying for the top state post. The main fight will be between Economy Minister Sergio Massa nominated by the ruling “Unity for the Fatherland” coalition, former Security Minister Patricia Bullrich, who represents the largest opposition coalition “Together for Change” and Javier Miley, the chairman of the Libertarian Party of the “Freedom Comes” alliance. In addition, the governor of Córdoba province, Juan Sciaretti, and deputy Miriam Bregman, representing the “Left and Workers’ Front” coalition, are fighting for the presidential post.
The current head of state Alberto Fernandes, whose support rating has dropped below 20%, announced in April that he would not run for a new term, even though the constitution allows him to do so.
The election comes amid a worsening economic crisis amid the coronavirus pandemic and one of the worst droughts in Argentina’s history. At the end of the year, inflation in the country is expected to be at least 100%. The poverty level in the country is 40 percent.
Voting is compulsory for all Argentine citizens over the age of 16. Preliminary results will be announced that evening.
