Voting begins for presidential elections in Uruguay

Montevideo. The voting circuits in Uruguay opened early Sunday morning and will remain operational until late afternoon for the national elections that will define the successor of President Luis Lacalle Pou and renew Parliament for the period 2025-2030.

At 08:00 local time (11:00 GMT) the 7,225 voting circuits enabled throughout the country were opened, which will operate until 19:30 local time (22:30 GMT), with an eventual extension of one hour if there are voters left in the premises.

In total there are 2 million 727 thousand 120 voters over 18 years of age authorized to vote, with mandatory voting and without the possibility of voting for Uruguayans who reside abroad.

The elections present an even bid between the continuity offered by the Government and the Republican Coalition (CR), and the change proposed by the left, represented in the Broad Front (FA), which governed between 2005 and 2020.

The former mayor of Canelones (south) Yamandú Orsi, of the FA, leads the polls with an average of 45 percent, seconded by the former secretary of the presidency Álvaro Delgado, of the ruling National Party (PN), who has an average of 25 percent .

If the winner does not exceed 50 percent of the votes, the next president will be defined in a runoff with the second most voted, on November 24, in which a simple majority is sufficient.

Orsi, a 57-year-old history teacher, assumed at the end of the campaign his commitment to dialogue, economic growth and stability, social protection and well-being, security and honesty.

Delgado, a veterinarian and former senator with a long political career, presents himself as the “re-election” of the Government and proposed that he will develop a second floor of transformations using the bases that Lacalle Pou (2020-2025) has, who cannot be re-elected.

The surprise of the campaign is Andrés Ojeda, a 40-year-old lawyer who raised voting intentions for the historic Colorado Party (PC) to 16 percent, betting on the “new politics” and defining himself as “pragmatic” at an ideological level.

The PN heads the Republican Coalition, an alliance of four parties, including the PC and which also includes Cabildo Abierto and the Independent Party, which in this instance compete separately and which, in the event of a runoff, will support the candidate who competes with the FA.

Orsi will vote this morning in Canelones, capital of the department of the same name, located 50 kilometers from Montevideo. Delgado will do so around noon in the Pocitos neighborhood of Montevideo and Ojeda will vote in the early afternoon in the Punta Gorda area, also in the Uruguayan capital.

Orsi’s formula is completed with the candidacy for vice presidency of Carolina Cosse, Delgado has Valeria Ripoll as his vice presidential partner and Ojeda has Robert Silva.

“Considering the trend, this is a favorable scenario for the FA,” he told Xinhua Alejandra González, researcher on the Citizen Perception Plant team.

In the opinion of Antonio Cardarello, researcher at the Institute of Political Science of the University of the Republic (Udelar), Orsi and Delgado stand out for their efficient public management and capacity for dialogue, but “they are not candidates who have generated a passion among voters.” .

Although almost half of the population approves of Lacalle Pou’s management, notable for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, drought and inflation, he has not managed to transfer that popularity to Delgado.

In total there are eleven candidates for the presidency, although currently there are only six parties that have parliamentary representation.

On the same voting sheet, the voter endorses a candidate for president, vice president and representatives for Parliament, all from the same party.

The Chamber of Senators, of 30 members elected at the national level and chaired by the vice president of the Republic, and the House of Representatives, of 99 members nominated by the departments, make up the Legislative Branch.

Simultaneously, the constitutional reform initiative on Social Security that eliminates the private pension system and raises the minimum retirement age to 60 years will be put to the citizens’ consideration, which is rejected by the three main candidates, although it is promoted by some sectors of the FA, and a proposal to enable night raids on homes by the Police, promoted only by the current ruling party.

Primary count data is expected to be available before midnight Sunday.
