Vote of confidence: Bloc support is not guaranteed

Bloc leader Yves-François Blanchet warns that his party’s support is far from guaranteed for the vote of confidence that Justin Trudeau’s Liberals will face this fall.

“If it is worse to leave the government in place than to bring it down, we will bring it down,” he said Thursday in a press briefing held on the occasion of the end of the summer caucus of the Bloc Quebecois .

Speaking outside the Espace René-Lévesque, in New Carlisle in the Gaspé, Mr. Blanchet recalled the Bloc’s demands to support the Speech from the Throne that the Trudeau government will present on September 23.

In particular, we are calling for unconditional health transfers to the provinces and support for seniors.

“It is shameful that the group in Quebec and Canadian society that is most vulnerable to the pandemic […] is the one we take care of the least, ”said Mr. Blanchet surrounded by his deputies.

Prime Minister Trudeau announced on Tuesday that he was proroguing Parliament with the agreement of Governor General Julie Payette, which wiped out the parliamentary session and put an end to the activities of parliamentary committees such as those investigating on the WE Charity case.

The Liberal leader, in doing so, indicated that his government will present a new Speech from the Throne that will serve as a roadmap for economic recovery in times of COVID-19, which will be subject to a vote of confidence.

The Liberals will need the support of at least one opposition party to survive this. No opposition party has so far clearly indicated how it intends to position itself.

“We will always have the decency to listen to what the Speech from the Throne will contain,” added the Bloc leader Thursday. And, that’s when decisions will be made about how the Bloc will vote. ”
