Vote from the canton of Uri: clear yes to SBU laundry

poll

Clearly yes: people from Uri are behind the new SBU laundry

80.73 percent vote in favor of the loan decision of 2.1 million francs for the new laundry of the Uri Foundation for the Disabled (SBU). The turnout is high at 61.57 percent.

With 12,930 votes in favor to 3,087 against, the decision in favor of the loan application was very clear. The people of Uri have thus welcomed the start-up financing of 2.1 million francs for the construction of a new laundry from the Disabled Companies Foundation (SBU).

At the SBU, there is increased demand in the laundry sector from nursing homes, restaurants, industry and commercial operations. With the planned takeover of laundry from the Uri Cantonal Hospital (KSU), the current amount of laundry will almost quadruple. This provides the potential for the SBU’s laundry facility to be enlarged. According to the business plan, after a six-year build-up and growth phase, a sustainable operating phase can be achieved in the laundry. This requires start-up funding from the canton of CHF 2.1 million with graduated tranches spread over six years.

The new laundry is to be built in this existing Zgraggen Agro GmbH hall on the Schattdorf bypass road.

The government councilor and district councilor recommended that the voters accept the loan decision of 2.1 million francs for the start-up financing of the new laundry foundation for the disabled. The parties had also all passed the yes slogan.

Market potential of 400 tons

Around 110 tons of laundry are washed in the laundry of the Uri Foundation for the Disabled (SBU). In addition, the planned takeover of laundry at the Uri Cantonal Hospital will add around 200 tonnes of laundry per year. Due to the trend towards outsourcing in old people’s and nursing homes, it is expected that the SBU will be able to clean around 100 tonnes of additional laundry from old people’s and nursing homes by 2030. Inquiries to the SBU are coming from industry, trade and gastronomy, which cannot be taken into account due to the lack of capacity in today’s laundry. In the business plan, it is assumed that an additional 35 tons of laundry will be acquired in this segment. Possible orders from major projects (e.g. construction of the 2nd Gotthard tube) are not included in the assumptions of the business plan, as these are difficult to forecast. This results in a total market potential of around 400 tons.

A new laundry is needed so that the SBU can cope with these volumes. The planned location is a hall of Zgraggen Agro GmbH at a distance of ten minutes on foot on the bypass road in Schattdorf. The investment volume for the project is around 4.5 million francs. The start-up financing of 2.1 million francs will be needed for the years 2024 to 2029.
