Now 15 municipalities from the Rhine-Main region want to overturn the procedure and, if necessary, appeal against it.
With the alternative approach procedure, the trial operation of which was extended after a year in February, some of the aircraft are guided past Hanau and Offenbach over less densely populated areas. “Any measure that reduces aircraft noise in our big cities can only be welcomed,” says Hanau SPD parliamentary group leader Maximilian Bieri. As is well known, both cities suffer from the fact that most planes converge over their area when they are in full operation. The parliamentary group leader of the SPD Offenbach, Helena Wolf, agrees: “Our cities in the region have been particularly affected by the noise pollution from air traffic for decades and must be relieved.”
Wolf and Bieri now have a complete lack of understanding for the demand from 15 municipalities, including the Offenbach district, to suspend the procedure. “The aim of the Segmented Approach is to relieve badly affected cities like ours and to spread a lower burden on significantly more shoulders.” The announcement that they want to appeal against the continuation of the trial operation is a big sign for the two parliamentary group leaders Lack of solidarity in regional cooperation. According to the SPD, there is no question that Frankfurt Airport is a major economic factor in the region and an indispensable job engine. Many people in the region work at the airport, many companies are dependent on the proximity to the airport or would therefore settle in the Rhine-Main region. “On the one hand, the municipalities benefit from the proximity to the airport, on the other hand, the burden of aircraft noise should only be borne by large cities such as Hanau or Offenbach – we oppose this in no uncertain terms,” say Wolf and Bieri.
“Hanau and Offenbach also accept burdens in connection with air traffic, but these have to be kept as low as possible and, above all, distributed fairly.” Ultimately, the burdens have to be borne in solidarity. In this context, the two parliamentary group leaders call on the Hessian state government to support the trial operation of Fraport. If the alternative approach procedure leads to less noise for many, this must also be implemented, the SPD concludes.
