Voracious fire leaves eight firefighters injured and several displaced during Thanksgiving dinner in NJ

NEW JERSEY — A raging three-alarm fire at a building in West New York, New Jersey, left several firefighters injured and several people displaced, just during Thanksgiving dinner.

The accident occurred around 6:00 pm on Thursday in a 3-story building located in Bergenline Ave y 53rd St when the huge flames interrupted the celebration of Thanksgiving. In the same place there is a pharmacy on the first floor.

Several North Hudson Regional firefighters arrived on the scene, and in the midst of rescuing 4 residents, the flames caused an explosion that caused another building next door to burn and collapse.

In total 8 firefighters who were at the scene were injured after the explosion and were taken to the hospital on Thursday night. Three of them were on the roof of the 2nd building and fell, the others had to be transported by ambulance to the hospital.

All the firefighters have already been discharged, and one of them had to receive surgery on his ankle and another would have to receive surgery as well.

In total 20 people, including children, lost everything and the Red Cross is helping about 10 families.

“It is a sad day for the borough of West New York. They, along with their residents, caused people to be displaced, they lost their residences and they lost their belongings,” he said. “It is a difficult day for firefighters, not because we had to work but because of the injured. Now their families will suffer too,” said West New York Fire Chief David Donnarumma.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the incident and it is still unknown what caused the fire.
