Voorburgs Dagblad | One in eight deaths caused by corona

One in eight deaths in the Netherlands last year was caused by the corona virus. That amounts to more than 20,000 people, or twelve percent of the total number of deaths. 37,000 people died from cardiovascular disease and 47,000 people succumbed to cancer. A total of 168,678 inhabitants of the Netherlands died last year, the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) has calculated.

Compared to 2019, the number of deaths increased by 16,800 people. The coronavirus played a role in all age groups. Among the elderly, the number of deaths from cancer, lung diseases, nervous system diseases, mental disorders and cardiovascular diseases decreased, but many elderly people died from corona infection. Also, especially people over 80 with a chronic disease died prematurely from Covid-19. This also happens if there has been a hefty flu epidemic, says the statistical office.

Deaths from cancer and cardiovascular disease have fallen slightly again in 2020. That has been the case since 2000. Since 2018, the number of people dying from diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia has also fallen. In contrast, the number of people dying from non-natural causes such as an accident, murder, manslaughter or suicide is increasing. In 2020, 52 of every 100,000 people died from this. Death due to or after a fall is becoming more common, according to Statistics Netherlands, presumably because people are living independently at home for longer.
