Vondroušová Advances to Cincinnati Quarterfinals After Straight-Set Wins

The 24-year-old Vondroušová in Cincinnati, after two-set wins over compatriot Kateřina Siniaková and Russia’s Anastasia Potapova, also managed a duel with US Open 2017 winner Stephens without losing a set. The tenth-seeded Czech did not even serve the first set when she lost serve only once in the match at 5:4. She decided only in the marathon twelfth game, in which she averted three break points and used the fifth set point.

In the second set, the favored Vondroušová did not face a single break point and took serve twice from her 30-year-old opponent. After being eliminated in the round of 16 last week in Montreal by the American Cori Gauffová, the native of Sokol will play her first quarterfinal since the Wimbledon triumph.

“The beginning of the match was crazy, it was very windy, we both struggled with it. But I think we did a good job on the serve, it was difficult to return it. I just tried to return it to the court as much as possible and I ran after every ball, ” said Vondroušová in an interview on the court. “It’s great to be in the quarterfinals. I didn’t know how I was going to play after Wimbledon. I feel like I have a target on my back, so I’m very happy to be this far.”

Vondroušová’s next opponent will be world number one Iga Šwiateková from Poland, who in the round of 16 after losing the first set 3:6 defeated the Chinese Cheng Chin-wen in the next sets unequivocally 6:1, 6:1. So far, the only mutual duel at Roland Garros 2020 was smoothly won by Šwiateková.

While Vondroušová won all three matches in Ohio in two sets, Muchová advanced each time after three sets. Today, the Roland Garros finalist defeated world number eight Sakkari for the fourth time in a row and for the second time this year. In the nearly two-hour match, the Czech tennis player was visibly limited by her abdominal muscles, which she cooled with an ice bag between games, but she still finished the match with a clear game.

Bouzková and Nosková to the event

The next Czech representative who will appear in the round of 16 is Marie Bouzková, who, in terms of numbers, will face the toughest opponent. The native of Prague will face the world number three Jessica Pegulaová, who will also be supported by the home crowd. The mutual balance can give hope to Bouzková, with Pegulaová tied 2:2.

One hour after midnight our time, the duel between Linda Nosková, who surprisingly sent Petra Kvitová out of the game, and the domestic star Coco Gauffová should begin.
