Brussels, Oct 7 (EFE).- The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said this Monday that “it is time to put an end to the bloodshed” and to “escape the dangerous cycle of attacks and retaliation” in the East Half.

«It is time to end the bloodshed. “It is time to escape the dangerous cycle of attacks and reprisals by reducing tensions throughout the region,” Von der Leyen said during a ceremony at the Brussels synagogue marking the first anniversary of the Hamas terrorist attacks of October 7.

The head of the community Executive hoped that the 101 Israeli hostages still in the hands of the Islamist group Hamas “finally return home.” And may peace and security finally reach the people of Israel, Gaza and Lebanon,” according to the text of the speech released by the European Commission.

“Our thoughts are with all the innocent victims of the tragic sequence of events unleashed by the terrorist group Hamas on October 7. Because all civilians must be protected,” said the German politician.

Furthermore, Von der Leyen stressed that the “alarming outbreak of anti-Semitism here in Europe” is “unacceptable”, which “nothing” can justify.

«No war, no political argument can excuse anti-Semitism. Let us be clear: anti-Semitism is a danger to our democracy. It is a gangrene that is eating away at the very foundations of our European Union. And we will never be able to accept it,” he stressed.

Von der Leyen promised that “she will spare no effort” so that Jews can live and prosper in peace in the European Union, and therefore assured that she is willing to dedicate more resources to that goal.

«The history of Europe is the history of European Jews. And the future of Europe must also be your future,” said Von der Leyen at the remembrance ceremony for the deceased on October 7, 2023. EFE
