Volvo’s New Environmental Initiative: Container Ships to Use Biodiesel and Reduce CO2 Emissions

Container ships leased by Volvo, which deliver parts to the Swedish company’s factories, will from now on fill their tanks with biodiesel, according to the manufacturer’s press release.

Volvo has announced a new environmental initiative that will reduce annual CO₂ emissions from logistics operations by 55,000 tonnes. Thanks to renewable fuels, CO2 emissions are reduced by at least 84 percent1 compared to fossil fuels. Ships powered by fatty acid methyl ester biodiesel have been plying in ocean waters since June 1, ensuring the supply of components to the company’s factories in Europe and America.

The Swedes have agreed with the logistics giants Maersk, Kuehne+Nagel and DB Schenker, also agreeing on the finer details of the contract, for example, if renewable fuel is not available for a particular shipment, the logistics partner uses the renewable fuel allocated by Volvo for another customer’s route elsewhere, thus maintaining the overall reduction in fossil fuel consumption equivalent to actual consumption in container ships.

In effect, this means that a container ship can be filled with fossil fuels, but then its volume will have to be compensated by another customer with renewable fuels.

Volvo hopes that the initiative can encourage other manufacturers to take a similar step in order to improve the environmental situation. This would be a kind of medium-term solution until there are technologies that can completely eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from transport.

Volvo’s goal, set by the company for the period 2018-2025, is to reduce the life-cycle carbon footprint per car by 40 percent, which requires a 25 percent reduction in operational emissions, including in logistics.

Volvo has also announced that it will strive to achieve climate-neutral production by 2025.
