Volvo Trucks North America adds a new layer to its recent technological innovations with the Volvo I-Torque. Now available as an option with the latest D13 Turbo Compound engine, the new I-Torque is a unique powertrain solution that keeps the truck running at peak performance with a fuel-efficient 31% increase in speed range, achieving up to at 8.5 miles (13,679km) per gallon (4.54 liters) at a speed of 85 mph (at 137km/hour).
I-Torque includes the D13 Turbo Compound (TC) engine, I-Shift with overdrive functions, adaptive shift strategy, a new mapped version of Volvo I-See predictive cruise control and rear axle ratios exceptionally low, up to 2.15.
The overall functionality of the I-Torque setup is that it uses Volvo Trucks 13-speed I-Shift with a track ratio, and combines the fuel efficiency benefits of direct drive with the performance and overdrive flexibility.
Integrating I-See, low rear axle ratios and load-sensing software, the truck’s system selects, at highway speeds, either direct drive or overdrive to maximize efficiency energy without sacrificing performance or productivity.

I-Shift, together with the new version of I-See technology that uses real-time map data and GPS positioning, manages speed and shifting in the most fuel-efficient way, regardless of the route or terrain, and generates up to 1% more fuel savings.
“In today’s transportation business environment, which requires a high degree of flexibility and adaptable truck performance over various terrains and routes, I-Torque is the solution for our customers who need to stay competitive with a truck where the economy of fuel and performance are optimal. »
The current business environment is a perfect example of this, where diesel prices are well above $4 a gallon and transport pressures are high,” said Johan Agebrand, Product Marketing Manager, Volvo Trucks North America.
