At Volvo Cars in Ghent port, hundreds of employees are laying down their work for the second day in a row. The company wants to introduce a 40-hour work week, but that is not going well. According to the employees, compensation in wages and time off is too meager.

The carmaker decided in the late afternoon of Thursday to restart talks after the summer holidays. After this, part of the afternoon shift went back to work, but large parts of the staff again refused to work on the night shift.

“The work has also been laid down for the morning shift,” confirms spokesman Barbara Blomme. Volvo Cars indicates that the company is running well. For example, the successful model XC40 is in great demand, which is one of the reasons why production has to be increased. Blomme: “In the coming months we will be recruiting hundreds of extra people, but the work regime will also have to be adjusted. However, we notice that there has been concern about this. That is why we are entering into a dialogue again.”
