Metal fragments from an exploding airbag recently killed the driver of an older Volvo in the US. The American regulator National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports this on Saturday. The airbags in question are made by the German parts supplier ZF / TRW.
Humidity
The recall concerns the 2001-2003 S80 and S60 models sold in several US states with high humidity. Regulator NHTSA is currently in talks with Volvo about other models equipped with similar airbags and will decide later whether further action is needed.
The device that blows air into the driver’s side air bag can rupture if the air bag is deployed, causing metal parts to fly around.
The Volvo recall affects cars sold or registered in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and the US Virgin Islands.
