Wireless charging of electric cars is extremely convenient on paper – you just park and the car starts charging. Volvo can test the Cabonline taxi service in collaboration with the Gothenburg taxi service to see if it can work in reality.
–
The principle will be similar to wireless charging of smartphones. The driver parks the modified Volvo XC40 Recharge in the right place and the car, equipped with a special wireless communicator, connects to the charger built into the parking space. And charging begins; no need to get out of the car. However, it is necessary to open the door to start charging, so that the driver is not 100% protected against heavy rain.
–
Of course, it has its pitfalls. It is necessary to park relatively accurately above the charger. The press release does not state tolerance – it does not provide any technical data except for the maximum wireless charging power of 40 kW DC – but it says that the camera system in the car will help the driver with accurate parking.
–
The test cars will run more than 12 hours a day and will cover 100,000 kilometers a year, which is equivalent to 274 km every day if they drive really daily. This means that, in theory, taxis would need to charge slowly overnight if the XC40 Recharge had a standard range of just over 400 km, according to the carmaker’s website.
–
In any case, such a mileage per year is very valuable for research purposes. Whether we will see this technology in the sale to the public, we can only hope so far.
