Despite constantly touching on how the brand makes unique electric trucks, it is clear that the Swedish automaker is still a strong supporter of internal combustion engine technology. In the nomenclature line of power units for the configuration of FH16 main tractors, a new very powerful diesel engine appeared, designated by the index D17.
The announcement was made at an exhibition held at Volvo’s “home” campus in Gothenburg, where an all-new FH 16 main tractor with the aforementioned D17 diesel engine was shown to journalists. Oddly enough, the D17 is the largest and most powerful diesel engine ever installed in a Volvo truck. It is made in three power options – 600, 700 and 780 hp.
Compared to the D16 diesel version it replaces, the advanced engine technology gives drivers maximum performance and, importantly, better fuel economy than before.
Volvo sees the D17 engine as a clean, low-emission, high-fuel choice for diesel fleets currently operating in Europe. The developers ensure that the new engine fully fulfills its mission with zero emissions.
Such a powertrain had to be developed in response to the new regulations regarding the increased size and weight of Class 8 trucks, which came into effect across Sweden on 1 December 2023. Combination trailers are with a total length of 34.5 meters and a total weight of up to 100 tons (93 tons) is now allowed.
The Swedish government agreed with the scientists, who confirmed that the use of longer and heavier road trains would reduce energy consumption by up to 30% for individual vehicles and 4-6% in total. These figures are valid for BEVs, hydrogen fuel cells, biofuels and diesel engines.
Three FH16 780s can replace six tractors pulling six single trailers, each with a total length of 16.5 meters, each pulling two trailers with a total length of 34 meters, resulting in a 27% reduction in their CO2 emissions.
However, such combination tractors with trailers are only allowed on about 5,900 kilometers of the best and newest roads out of Sweden’s 100,000 kilometer road network. However, everything indicates that there will be more such areas in the near future.
The new engine will help to operate the transport with such a load. As Volvo Group director of ecology and innovation Lars Martesson said, the engine is equipped with a single efficient turbocharger. To make the most of the D17’s combustion process, the developers rely on Volvo’s highly successful and patented wavy piston design.
The result is a cleaner engine that delivers more power and fewer emissions than the D16 engine it replaces. The D17 engine is proven to run on biodiesel at all power outputs. The new injection system provides the best fuel economy and the higher cylinder pressure ensures high power output.
The D17 engine’s “braking” power is also increased throughout the speed range, Martensson said. This allows for quick gear changes resulting in less wear on the brake pads and discs, while also resulting in more efficient downshifts.
Trucks of this record length are equipped with StoneRidge MirrorEye rear view cameras. The system includes rearview screens mounted on the front pillars. These screens can be configured to show different angles and vantage points behind the truck.
