Volvo Announces End of Internal Combustion Engines and Transition to Electric by 2030

In 2022 Volvo announced the stop to the development of internal combustion engines, in view of the total transition to electric, which the Swedish brand plans for 2030. In the same year it also got rid of its stake in Aurobay, a joint venture also linked to the combustion engine sector.

Today it says goodbye to the Diesel engine, with the last car equipped in this way leaving the Belgian factory in Ghent. However, this is not a surprise decision, as Volvo itself had already announced this intention in September 2023.

The last Diesel car was a Volvo V60 Cross Country. Now the company will focus on hybrid for a certain period, to gradually move to electric only. The 100% electric range already has three models available. The first was the XC40 Recharge, an electric version of the popular SUV, which was followed by the C40 Recharge, a new electric crossover.

There are many expectations on the new arrival, EX30, which combines compact SUV shapes with a particularly attractive price for a Volvo car. Then the EX90 will arrive, effectively the brand’s new electric flagship. All cars based on the new technologies of the Geely Group, and which therefore have a lot in common with cars from Polestar, Lotus or Zeekr.
