In a new show of solidarity, a group of women started a solidarity campaign to collect wool, transform it into blankets, and provide shelter to those who need it most. The initiative arose from the project “Chain of favours”, integrated to Lola Salas, Gisela Orlandi Y Lorraine Galotto, who accompanied by Lorena Dietz, pastry and confectionery, and Carina Gudiño, who collaborates in the diffusion, they had already been making cakes to collaborate with the snacks in the solidarity dining rooms.
This new solidarity movement, which is carried out in conjunction with Banco Credicoop, proposes the donation of wool or woven wool squares. Donations can be approached at the bank branch of Bv. May 25, 1763, from 8 to 13.
“We do it in conjunction with Banco Credicoop for a matter of convenience, because many people sometimes do not have what to carry, what to go, or it is difficult for us to go looking for it. So in the bank there will be a box to deposit. As it is in the center, it is more practical ”, explained Orlandi, one of the organizers.
How is it going to work
Another way to collaborate is by donating wool garments that are no longer used, which will be unwoven to take advantage of the material. Also, you can join volunteers to sew.
“When the cold came a few days from now, we thought about making little squares of wool to make blankets, quilts. We are looking for those who have leftover wool or who want to share new or used wool, even pullovers. Now is the time to change, to accommodate cabinets, and you may find yourself with a knitted sweater that you want to discard. We would unweave them and take advantage of the wool from that sweater, ”Orlandi explained.
Then he added: “We are also looking for people who weave. We knew that there were groups of women who obviously with the pandemic could not get together anymore, but that maybe they are doing it from their homes. Then it would be great to find people who tile to speed up the work a bit and start to assemble and distribute as soon as possible. We have some people, but we always talk about older people and we do not want to tire them or make it a requirement, but to enjoy it. Therefore, the more weaving hands there are, the better ”.
The little squares that will be used will be 20 centimeters per side: the unification of the measurements obeys to simplify the subsequent task. “We are going to intertwine them and make quilts and blankets that will later be distributed in the places where they are most needed. We already know places, families, settlements, ”said the woman.
Also food
Along with adding this new proposal, the group continues to promote other campaigns.
“We started with the snacks, with the cakes, because it happened that way. It was a demand at that time for food. Now, with practically a year of walking those places, we were getting to know different needs. And now, considering that the cold is coming, the coat is an opportunity to help in another way. But our idea is to always be present and try to meet any need, “Orlandi described.
For this reason, they continue to collect flour, eggs, milk, common and icing sugar, dulce de leche, oil, but also tomato puree, peas, noodles, rice or other non-perishable foods. Likewise, they also collect clothes and shoes.
“Although our strength is cakes, because that is how we start and we have someone to materialize them, we receive everything. We even donated minced meat to a picnic area. Anything you want to donate is always welcome. It materializes in food for a lot of kids, ”said the volunteer.
Volunteers are all
Beyond the fact that the face of the project is that of a group of women, they recognize that each of the people who collaborate with them is a volunteer.
“The three of us are the ones who carry out the project and organize ourselves, we see what is there, where, we search, we carry. But volunteers are all those who bring us something. The one who brought me three eggs is a volunteer for the project ”, Orlandi acknowledged.
At the end, the volunteer referred to the panorama they are currently facing when walking the streets: “There are more children, the number increases, depending on the neighborhood it increases a lot. Then there are picnic areas where there are children of hard-working parents who go because maybe they are alone and not because of lack of income, but because they are contained and cared for by someone, instead of being alone at home or on the street. Not all the kids who go to the picnic area do it out of hunger, but they all seek containment ”.
“There the kids are seen, there is someone who looks them in the face, who knows their name, how old they are. In the picnic area they have a space where they are encouraged, they are told about the importance of going to school, they are congratulated, they are accompanied, there they find an eye that does not judge them ”, he closed.
