Nine million Chinese im Corona-Lockdown!
Due to the increasing incidence, the authorities in the Chinese city of Changchun have imposed a lockdown.
► The residents of the city in north-eastern China are therefore only allowed to leave their homes for shopping. Only one person per household is allowed to leave the house every two days to buy essentials. Schools and most businesses have been closed. In addition, a home office obligation and corona mass tests were announced.
In addition, all nine million residents of the city are to be tested for the virus.
China has recorded the highest corona numbers in two years: the number of daily new infections rose above the 1000 mark this week. Three weeks ago it was less than 100. According to the Ministry of Health, 1369 local cases of infection were registered nationwide on Friday.
Jilin Province, whose capital is Changchun, is one of more than a dozen provinces struggling with rising infection numbers. The highly contagious omicron variant of the coronavirus is also spreading in Shanghai, the most populous city in China. The authorities in the economic metropolis therefore ordered school closures and online classes on Friday.
China’s National Health Commission, meanwhile, approved the use of antigen tests as self-tests for the first time since the pandemic began. The corona virus was first discovered in China at the end of 2019.
The government in Beijing has so far taken drastic measures to prevent the spread of the virus over a large area. Officially, just over 100,000 infections were registered, of which 4,636 were fatal. However, the figures should be viewed with caution.
But since omicron was first discovered in the eastern Chinese port city of Tianjin at the beginning of January, health experts have feared that the more contagious corona variant could push Chinese protective measures to their limits.
